Thanks for completing the quiz on how much sleep your baby needs, your results are below but first let me introduce myself!
I’m Jem and I help families to get better sleep with confidence, not cry it out.
I’m a mum of two, and have one great and one TERRIBLE sleeper. I’m on a mission to share all the tips and tricks I know to help parents like US get better sleep and do it in a way that feels aligned with your gentle parenting ethos.
Your toddler is meeting their developmental milestones so sleep isn’t impacting that – perfect!
Many people, babies and adults alike experience grumpiness upon waking. If we wake from a deep part of the sleep cycle, we might experience sleep inertia (or sleep drunkeness), which is that unpleasant groggy feeling.
As long as your little one is back to their usual happy selves after a 10/15 minutes, it’s pretty safe to say they’re doing OK sleep-wise.
Are you surprised I didn’t ask you how many hours they sleep in the quiz? Or how long their wake windows are?
That’s because as long as they are developing as they should, and are generally happy in themselves, sleep is working just fine.
Is there anything you can do?
It can help to avoid waking them up when they are in a deep sleep and waiting until they are in a light sleep stage.
Typically, sleep cycles at this age are somewhere between 45 & 60 minutes, but you will also be able to tell they are in a lighter sleep stage because they might turn over, sigh or look like they are stirring.
It can also be helpful to recognise that this is their temperament and they need a bit of time to come around from their sleep. Factoring this into your plans will help, so plan ahead and expect to spend 15 minutes after nap time having some extra cuddles before getting on with your day.
Whilst knowing that they are getting enough sleep is (hopefully) reassuring, it doesn’t mean that YOU’RE getting enough sleep!
When you’re tired it’s hard to see what you might be missing, and whilst I’m sure you feel like you’ve read SO much about sleep it can still feel completely bewildering.
I’m not a sleep coach who has a one-size-fits all approach to sleep, I don’t share prescriptive schedules and set wake windows for you to follow, because guess what?
Yes – that’s right they are all different and each day can be different!
So if you’re looking for some help/guidance on how to improve common sleep challenges like:
