I turned to this book when I was desperate not to use sleep training but my baby’s sleep had nose-dived for months and I was suffering badly. One night after 6 wakes and no more than 1.5 hours sleep I finally found the time to read this book. Spotted a few areas we could improve and she only woke twice last night. Would definitely recommend this book if you are looking for gentle ways to support your baby’s sleep rather than sleep training.

I can’t recommend this book enough. It’s so easy to read, even if like me you read it at 3am on the Kindle wondering why your baby won’t sleep! It’s more than just a book about sleep. We used the book to make a few tweaks to our routine (that I wouldn’t have believed would make any difference) and have already gone from 3-4 wakes a night to just 1! If you want a book that reinforces your feelings not to leave your baby to cry it out but are in desperate need of changes and improvements to sleep this is the book for you.

I think we must’ve read every bit of sleep advice on social media for our little sleep-stealer, and this is the only guide I’ve found that has actually worked for us! I’m Jem, a sleep consultant who studied under some of the most well-known names in the sleep, neuroscience and parenting world, including Lyndsay Hookway, Gordon Neufeld, and Dr Laura Markham; and mother of two – one great sleeper and one VERY difficult sleeper.

I honestly loved it! I have 2 other sleep books, and this is head and shoulders above them. This book is relatable and strikes the balance between being informed, and evidence based without showing bias yet feeling like you’re listening to a friend. I have found it so helpful.

Jemma has done a great job on this book. It is so much more practical than I expected, giving me clear steps that didn’t feel extreme and still respecting the baby and carer.

At times it’s painfully funny and covers information I haven’t read before like how temperament impacts sleep.

I think the chapters about sleep myths and truths, and how to cope with a crying baby will be very helpful for parents.

Jemma writes in a way that you could imagine you’re just sat on the sofa having a chat with a friend. The chapters flow really well and Jemma offers real life and realistic example along the way – and a lot of humour thrown in! You might think before you have children that you’ll just do controlled crying and all of your sleep needs will be met. Unfortunately it doesn’t quite turn out that way. Either controlled crying might not work for your family, or now that your baby is an actual being right in front of you then the thought of just leaving them on their own in a room to cry isn’t quite as easy as you thought it would be. Jemma offers a refreshing and realistic approach to sleep without the extreme methods, and a whole lot of love (both for babies and for parents). She is clear, and concise and backs everything up with science. This is by far the best baby sleep book that I’ve read (and I’ve read a lot). Thanks Jemma for all of the wisdom and for saving my sanity!

This book is written really well. It dives into the science behind sleep, which is used to inform gentle and effective methods of achieving your sleep goals for your baby.
The cry it out method is discussed as well the rationale for looking at gentle sleep training instead.
I feel much more empowered to deal with my baby’s sleep habits having read this book. I would recommend to any parent having difficulty with their child’s sleep, as this is a game changer.
